Traditions are an interesting concept. Some of them have their roots in ignorant, cruel and fearful practices (consider the ritual sacrifice of animals or cock-fighting) while others serve to remind us of what is good and precious in our lives.

Mother’s Day, regarded by some as another occasion dreamt up by greeting card manufacturers, is surely one of the latter.

The origins of Mother’s Day is not clear. Some argue it stems from a Greek custom of mother worship, while its American traditions lie in the work of a mother to acknowledge the good work and pacifism of mothers after the civil war.

Since then it has become a day to thank and acknowledge mothers around the world, from Africa to Asia, and one that is heavily commercialised (especially in the US and in Asia).

Popular ways to thank mothers include the sending of cards and having flowers delivered to her house. Mother’s Day flowers are an important source of business for florists, local and international, and while white flowers are traditionally given people regularly give their mothers a bunch of their favourite flowers whether they are white or not.

Other gifts include chocolates and perfume, books and cosmetics – there are similarities to be found with gifts given for Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day; both traditions involve the giving of indulgent gifts or gifts with an emphasis on sweetness.

It is customary for men to celebrate Mother’s Day and also children. Naturally, young children cannot arrange to have flowers delivered without the help of an adult (which is often why cards and gifts will be made at school) and while a father might send Mother’s Day flowers he might also help children to choose a card and gift for their mother.

When they are older and in adulthood, it is often, but not always, the case that children continue to celebrate their mothers on Mother’s Day.

But as every mother knows, it certainly feels nice when they do.
